Total Pixel Space

Jacob Adler

If every image is a finite grid of pixel values, does every possible picture and every possible film already exist as a number? And if so, as digital creators are we searching for them rather than inventing them? The idea has roots in Borges's The Library of Babel. Jacob Adler, a composer who had never made a film, generated thousands of stills in Midjourney, animated them in Runway, and voiced the narration with ElevenLabs, all without once saying the words "artificial intelligence." Posted in December 2024, it won the Grand Prix at Runway's 2025 AI Film Festival from about 6,000 entries, and Ars Technica called it strangely moving.
