Overstake: A Finished Live-Action Film Rebuilt with Generative AI

Stas Mareev / Cappu Films

At the Busan International Film Festival's Asian Contents & Film Market, Hong Kong sales company Cappu Films took worldwide rights to Overstake, a sci-fi action thriller writer-director Stas Mareev had already shot, and was now rebuilding with generative AI. A wounded veteran enters a lethal betting game with two hours to cross an industrial city and keep his ex-wife alive, while strangers get offers on their phones to save him or stop him. The live-action performances and story stay; the environments, action and visual style are being regenerated.

"'Overstake' is a chance to return to a film I already directed and rebuild its world at a scale that was impossible for us before," Mareev said. Buyers saw a promo and a handful of finished sequences, with the AI work still under way. It was the hybrid workflow applied after the fact: a completed independent film sent back through the models to become a bigger one, and sold to the market on that basis.
