Grok Imagine's $175K Odyssey Contest

"Homer had a lyre. You have Grok Imagine." xAI and X launched a two-week contest with a $175,000 prize pool — $100K / $50K / $25K for the top three — for 3-to-5-minute scenes from Homer's Odyssey, generated mainly with Grok Imagine's video and voice tools (at least a minute of dialogue required, outside tools allowed only for editing, music, and sound effects). Open to U.S. creators 18 and older, entered by quote-tweet, ranked first on Premium timeline impressions and then judged on creativity, originality, rules adherence, and engagement. Submissions closed August 31. The subtext was hard to miss: weeks after Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey opened to $264M worldwide, Elon Musk had pledged that Grok Imagine would make a "historically accurate" Odyssey of its own by year-end. The contest crowdsourced the audition. Dozens of entries recreated the Scylla battle, Circe's island, and Odysseus's family longing — one-person productions blending cinematic flair with AI efficiency, from noir stylings and dragon twists to emotional reunions. Among the highlights, Jenny Krakovsky completed a feature-length, AI-assisted Odyssey in 50 days. After February's $1M ad contest, it's xAI's second big-purse bet that the fastest way to showcase a model is to pay its community to make films with it.
