Copyright Office Report Part 2: Copyrightability

Six months after the digital-replicas report, the Copyright Office publishes Part 2: the answer to the question every AI filmmaker has been asking — can the output of a generative model be copyrighted at all? The conclusion: AI-assisted work can be protected to the extent of the human contribution (curation, arrangement, edited human-authored material), but purely AI-generated material is not, and prompting alone doesn't qualify as authorship. For festivals, distributors, and rights desks, this is the legal handle they've been waiting for to evaluate which AI-assisted submissions they can actually license.
