# Runway Motion Brush

Runway teased Motion Brush on November 10, 2023  as "A new way to add controlled movement to your generations" and shipped it to everyone in Gen-2's image-to-video mode on November 23, 2023. Paint the area or subject you want to move, pick a direction and a strength, then generate. It arrived alongside finer Director Mode camera controls, so object motion and camera motion could be set separately in the same shot.

Until then, image-to-video meant handing over a still and taking whatever movement came back. Motion Brush made motion something you placed, and it set the pattern the rest of the field followed: Multi Motion Brush in January 2024 let you paint several regions with their own motion, and [Kling 1.5](https://aifilmhistory.org/entry/kling-1-5) brought the idea to its model ten months later.
