David Holz's independent research lab releases the first version of Midjourney. The output is dreamlike and painterly, low on coherence — but you type a sentence into a chat window and a picture comes back. What starts as an invite-only Discord experiment in February opens to a public beta on July 12, and a community forms around it almost overnight. This is the tool that will spend the next three years teaching a generation of filmmakers to prompt.
