# China's AI Short-Drama Glut: 98.7% Fail to Recoup Their Costs

The first hard numbers on what happens when AI makes content almost free to produce. In the first half of 2026, 221,900 AI-made short dramas were released on Douyin, China's TikTok, drawing 515.7 billion cumulative views. Yet only about one in 77 turned a profit; the other 98.7% failed to earn back what they cost. "Many in the industry feel AI has lowered the barrier to production," said Lin Qiwen, vice president of the ad-data firm DataEye, "but creators aren't earning more. If anything, they're losing money faster."

Supply outran attention. AI titles surged from March and made up 70% of new short dramas by the second quarter, but their share of viewing peaked at 80% in April and May and slid to 68% by June, as audiences tired of characters who all looked alike. The short-drama platform Hongguo began cracking down on look-alike "AI faces," and Douyin added a tool to check likeness and copyright risk before release. Live-action dramas were squeezed too: new live-action titles in Hongguo's monthly rankings fell from 432 in February to 110 in June. Regulators answered with rules that took effect September 1, routing short dramas through national, provincial or platform review by budget, while six major platforms pledged at least ¥6 billion to support quality live-action work. The report, first carried by Hong Kong outlet HK01, spread widely again in October through a Korean webtoon editor's post that drew more than 300,000 views.
